7-Day Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climb

7 Days 6 Nights

7-Day Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climb

The Machame Route is one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic camping routes. It begins in lush rainforest on the mountain’s southern side, traverses varied high-altitude terrain and joins the summit approach from Barafu Camp. The seven-day programme provides a better acclimatisation profile than the compressed six-day version and includes the valuable climb-high, sleep-low movement between Lava Tower and Barranco Camp.

Route Highlights

  • Seven days for a steadier acclimatisation programme
  • Rainforest, Shira Plateau, Lava Tower and Barranco Valley
  • The famous Barranco Wall, climbed without technical equipment
  • Summit approach from Barafu Camp to Stella Point and Uhuru Peak
  • Camping supported by an experienced Tanzanian mountain crew

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Register at the gate and trek through humid montane forest to the first campsite.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Climb the Barranco Wall at a controlled pace and traverse a series of valleys to Karanga Camp.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Reach the high, exposed base camp and prepare clothing, headlamp and equipment for the summit attempt.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, then Mweka Camp

Begin around midnight, reach Stella Point and continue to Uhuru Peak if health and conditions permit. Descend to Mweka Camp.

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Complete the final forest descent, receive your summit certificate where applicable and return to your hotel.

Prepare with long walks, hills or stairs, cardiovascular training and consecutive hiking days. Moving slowly, eating well, hydrating and reporting symptoms honestly are essential. The guide’s safety decision takes priority over the summit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Barranco Wall require climbing equipment?

No. It is a steep scramble completed with close guidance, but it is not normally a technical rock climb.

Is seven days preferable to six?

For most climbers, the additional time supports a more gradual altitude adjustment and a less compressed itinerary.

Where do climbers sleep?

The Machame Route is a camping route. The mountain crew establishes camp and prepares meals each day.
