Tanzania Safari and Uganda Gorilla Trekking: A Local Expert’s Guide

A Tanzania safari and Uganda gorilla trek combines two very different East African experiences: open savannah wildlife in the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire, followed by a close forest encounter with mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The journey works best when the permit, lodge sector and regional flights are planned as one itinerary.

Why combine Tanzania and Uganda?

Tanzania is ideal for classic game viewing, the Great Migration, big cats and varied landscapes. Uganda adds rainforest, primates and a slower, greener side of East Africa. Together they create a balanced trip rather than two disconnected holidays.

  • Tanzania: Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara and optional Zanzibar.
  • Uganda: Bwindi or Mgahinga gorilla trekking, with optional chimpanzee tracking in Kibale.

Which country should come first?

We usually recommend starting with Tanzania and ending with the gorilla trek. Safari drives allow your body to settle into the time zone, while the gorilla encounter creates a memorable finale. The reverse order can be better when permit availability or international flights make it more efficient.

How do you travel between Tanzania and Uganda?

Most routes connect through Entebbe International Airport. Depending on schedules, travellers may fly from Kilimanjaro, Arusha, Dar es Salaam or an airstrip near the safari circuit via a regional hub. A night near Entebbe may be sensible before continuing by road or domestic flight toward Bwindi.

Do not judge the connection by flight time alone. Check-in, baggage limits, immigration and the onward transfer to the gorilla sector all matter. We build a realistic buffer so a delayed flight does not put the permit date at risk.

A practical 11-day outline

  1. Arrive in Arusha and rest.
  2. Safari in Tarangire.
  3. Travel toward the Serengeti.
  4. Full Serengeti game drive.
  5. Second Serengeti day, matched to the season.
  6. Ngorongoro Crater and Karatu.
  7. Return to Arusha or Kilimanjaro.
  8. Fly to Entebbe and overnight.
  9. Travel to the correct Bwindi or Mgahinga sector.
  10. Gorilla trekking day.
  11. Return to Entebbe or continue with a Uganda extension.

The permit sector must come before the lodge

Bwindi has different trekking sectors. A lodge can look close on a map yet require a long and difficult transfer to another sector. The safest order is to confirm the permit date and sector first, then reserve the matching lodge and transport. Gorilla trekkers must generally be at least 15 years old. Permit rules and prices can change, so we confirm the current details with the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Rwanda or Uganda for gorilla trekking?

Uganda often suits travellers who want a longer forest journey, more accommodation choices and the option to add chimpanzees. Rwanda can offer a shorter road transfer from Kigali. Read our detailed Uganda versus Rwanda gorilla trekking comparison before choosing.

Visas and border planning

The East Africa Tourist Visa covers Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda when its conditions are met, but it does not include Tanzania. Tanzania therefore requires its own entry arrangements. Always use official immigration sources and check the rules for your passport before travel.

Best time to combine the two countries

June to October and December to February are popular because conditions are generally drier. Gorilla trekking operates throughout the year, and the best Tanzania region changes with wildlife movement. April, May and November can bring more rain, greener scenery and fewer visitors.

Local planning advice

Secure the gorilla permit before committing to non-refundable regional flights. Match the Tanzania parks to the month, keep one sensible connection buffer, and pack soft-sided luggage because small aircraft commonly have stricter limits.

Frequently asked questions

How many days are needed?

Ten to twelve days is a practical minimum for Northern Tanzania and one Uganda gorilla trek. Add time for chimpanzees, Queen Elizabeth National Park or Zanzibar.

Can this be a private trip?

Yes. Safari vehicles and transfers can be private, while the gorilla trek is conducted in a small permit group under park authority rules.
