Northern Serengeti Safari in August: River Crossing Planning Guide

Written and reviewed by Eliya Tumaini, founder of Nature Bound Africa and a Tanzanian safari specialist with first-hand industry experience since 2002.

August is peak season in northern Tanzania and one of the most requested months for the northern Serengeti. Many travellers hope to see the Great Migration near the Mara River, but successful planning depends on enough time, the right location and realistic expectations. River crossings are natural events and can never be scheduled or guaranteed.

What happens in the northern Serengeti in August?

Depending on rainfall and grazing, large wildebeest and zebra herds may be spread across Kogatende, Bologonja, Lamai and surrounding areas. Some animals may already be in Kenya’s Masai Mara while others remain in Tanzania. Herds can approach a river and wait for hours or days before crossing, or move away without crossing at all.

How long should you stay?

Plan at least three nights in the northern Serengeti if river activity is a priority. Four nights provide more flexibility for changing wildlife conditions and reduce the pressure to rush between distant areas. A single night is rarely enough for a meaningful northern Serengeti experience.

Fly or drive?

Flying to Kogatende can save time and works well for shorter or higher-comfort itineraries. Driving through central Serengeti creates a longer safari and allows wildlife viewing across several ecosystems, but it requires more days. A practical itinerary may drive one direction and fly the other.

Suggested August itinerary

  1. Day 0: Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to Arusha.
  2. Day 1: Tarangire National Park.
  3. Day 2: Ngorongoro Highlands to central Serengeti.
  4. Day 3: Central Serengeti to the northern Serengeti.
  5. Days 4–5: Full game drives in the Kogatende and Mara River region.
  6. Day 6: Additional northern Serengeti game drive or flight south.
  7. Day 7: Ngorongoro or onward connection, according to the chosen route.

Accommodation and availability

Seasonal migration camps and permanent lodges in the north fill early for August. Compare camp location, travel time to key game-drive areas, room type and inclusions—not only the lodge category. Book once the route and international flights are sufficiently firm, because last-minute substitutions can place travellers far from the intended area.

Weather, packing and photography

August is generally dry, with cool early mornings and warmer afternoons. Bring layered clothing, sun protection, binoculars and camera dust protection. Photographers should request suitable seating and discuss lens support, luggage space and charging facilities in advance.

Northern Serengeti or Masai Mara?

Both areas can be excellent in August. The Serengeti and Masai Mara are connected ecosystems, but border logistics mean tourists cannot simply drive across the Mara River between parks. A combined Kenya–Tanzania safari requires an authorised land crossing or regional flights and should be routed carefully.

Eliya’s local-expert note

“August travellers often ask what time the wildebeest will cross. There is no timetable. I prefer to give guests several game-drive opportunities in the north and a guide who can respond to current information, rather than promise one dramatic moment that nature controls.”

Frequently asked questions

Are Mara River crossings guaranteed in August?

No. August is an important period for northern migration activity, but the timing and location of every crossing depend on wildlife movement and local conditions.

Is August crowded?

It is a popular high-season month. A knowledgeable guide, early starts and a well-located camp help manage the experience.

Can August be combined with Zanzibar?

Yes. Regional flights make a Serengeti and Zanzibar combination practical, subject to schedule and baggage limits.
