KENYA, TANZANIA & ZANZIBAR ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: VISAS, eTA & TRAVEL INSURANCE

Planning a Kenya safari, Tanzania wildlife adventure or Zanzibar beach holiday? Checking your entry requirements and mandatory travel insurance is an essential part of preparing for your journey.

Here is Nature Bound Africa’s guide to the official application portals for travellers and travel partners planning an East African itinerary.

🇰🇪 KENYA ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: ELECTRONIC TRAVEL AUTHORISATION

Kenya uses an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) rather than a traditional tourist visa. Travellers whose nationality requires an eTA should obtain approval before travelling. Some nationalities are exempt, so check the official eligibility guidance before applying.

Apply through the official Kenya eTA portal:
https://etakenya.go.ke/

KENYA MANDATORY INBOUND TRAVEL HEALTH INSURANCE

Applicable visitors must also obtain Kenya’s designated inbound travel health insurance. This is integrated into the eTA application process, with an official eCitizen portal available for purchasing cover.

🇹🇿 TANZANIA & ZANZIBAR VISA REQUIREMENTS

Travellers who require a Tanzania visa can apply through the official Tanzania eVisa portal.

A Tanzania visa covers both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. There is no separate Zanzibar visa. Check the visa category, validity and entry conditions that apply to your nationality and itinerary.

🛡️ TANZANIA & ZANZIBAR MANDATORY INBOUND INSURANCE

Applicable visitors must obtain the designated local inbound insurance, even if they already have international travel insurance.

Choose the provider according to your first point of entry:

• Arriving in mainland Tanzania first, including through Kilimanjaro International Airport, Dar es Salaam or a mainland land border — NIC:
https://inbound.nicinsurance.co.tz/

• Arriving in Zanzibar first — ZIC:
https://inbound.visitzanzibar.go.tz/

COMBINING MAINLAND TANZANIA AND ZANZIBAR?

One designated inbound policy generally covers both, based on your first point of entry and the applicable policy terms. Check your policy’s validity dates and conditions before travelling.

For a Kenya–Tanzania safari, the respective country insurance requirements apply separately.

✈️ YOUR EAST AFRICA TRAVEL CHECKLIST

Before departure:

✅ Check visa or eTA requirements for your passport nationality.
✅ Obtain the required entry approval.
✅ Purchase the applicable designated inbound insurance.
✅ Keep entry documents and insurance certificates accessible.
✅ Arrange comprehensive personal travel insurance covering cancellation, interruption, medical evacuation and your planned activities.

Mandatory inbound insurance provides defined benefits and limits. Check your wider travel insurance separately, especially for activities such as Mount Kilimanjaro trekking.
